Protection for children and family members in all aspects of life today is of vital concern. Whether television, radio, video games, Internet use, chat rooms, blogs, or the cinema, as each year passes, the risks to family members becomes increasingly dangerous. There are plenty of organizations doing their part to help in each of the areas listed above but there is only one program in existence which brings virtually every form of communication and entertainment under observation.

Organizations such as ICRA™, the most widely recognized content labeling system on the Internet, have been instrumental in the success of Internet safety programs. ICRA provides the most up to date content labeling solution avaiable for Internet content which is recognized globally. SafeSurf™, the very first content labeling system on the Internet and numerous other partners particpate in the fight for Internet safety. The bottom line is that we all agree on the importance of keeping family members safe from predators, offensive content, and physical harm.

Media content is a vital concern on the Internet today. Content on a web site can be a valuable asset in the marketing of a product or service and is often overlooked or abused. The Internet provides freedom of expression and press, but without self-labeling of web site content and a return to dependable quality in a product or service being sold or provided, political intervention and control is inevitable.

Are Bonds a Safer Investment

If the question of are bonds a safer investment has come up, then looking at private activity bonds could help you come to a conclusion. For many people the comparison between private activity bonds and other conventional savings methods will include the interest rates and how easy it is to access your savings. In general the interest on a private activity bond will be better than other methods of saving as they aren’t affected by inflation.

For anyone wanting to avoid spending their savings, if they just can’t resist purchasing items , a private activity bond would be a safer investment as you can tie your money into the bond for several years if you want to, often with penalty clauses for taking out your money sooner which can be a good deterrent for many people. With a private activity bond you know exactly what you money is doing and how much interest is gaining on it which you can have released monthly or annually. If you want to know exactly what is going on all the time with your money and want to avoid being hit by falling interest rates than this is definitely the safer way to invest.

Online Safety Tips

Online safety is a big deal, especially with all the crazy viruses out there. In order to save yourself from some whiplash symptoms and bad system errors, here are some tips to keeping your computer safe, especially with your kids and pre-teens.

First, write up rules for the Internet and keep them right by the computer. Perhaps even turn it into a pledge for the whole household to sign so everybody recognizes the rules. Children-friendly web sites cannot request personal information without a parent’s permission, so make sure to tell your children what personal information is and explain why they should never give that out to anybody online.

Also go over why they should not meet people outside of the Internet. Place the computer in an area where everybody can see, that way you know exactly what your kids are doing online and what web sites they are going to. These few tips should help out with online safety in your own home.

Stay Safe When Buying Online

Online shopping has opened up new venues and given one freedom and convenience to shop from their house. From real store shopping to TV shopping to more popular, online window shopping, the times have changed. With changing times, people are finding new and smarter ways to steal or forge or break into a safety measure. This applies to online safety as well. Internet safety is also an important aspect that one should not ignore when they are spending more time online. Efforts of ICRA for safer net surfing should only increase awareness among online shoppers.

Whether one is searching for the type of insurance or accessories needed for pets, they should always make it a point to check if it is a safe site. Content labeling systems are a great help, when one needs to verify if a site is safer to browse. Online thefts are on the rise, making it important that one browses only safer and reputed sites, leave alone providing their crucial financial data securely.

So, the next time one finds an advertisement stating hot deals in furnishings or automatic litter box, they should refrain themselves from navigating to it immediately. Make it a habit to buy from trusted vendors, who give importance to financial security. It is not always about buying online that can pose dangers, browsing or downloading free content may also harm one’s personal computers, making them lose their important data that they have stored and cherish. Installing safety measures in a PC is as important as, installing security measures to their house.

Keep Internet Security at the Forefront

Internet security has been at the forefront of my mind for as long as I’ve been using the internet.  There are a lot of scams out there that are after your money.  I’ve educated myself on the value of money by using this interest calculator and understanding how it relates to internet security.

It is very likely that it has never crossed your mind that you waste a lot of time doing your calculations manually. This is because there is a much easier and definitely faster means of doing this by using the interest calculator. This is a great tool that one can deploy when there is a need to know the amount of interest that you are bound to pay on your mortgage.

If the above statement describes your situation, then you are missing out on the most recent practices of working out interest rates. Those days that people used to spend long hours trying to work out some of these figures are long gone. The latest trends employ use of calculators. This is a tool that has been developed for use on a wide variety of calculations.

Using this method, one will be able to tell the expected amounts that are to be paid out at the end of each month. It is not possible to be accurate with the figures if you do not know the principal loan amount. Having knowledge of the expected repayment period is also key. In most cases, the longer the period the higher the rate. The shorter the repayment period the lower the rates.

The best thing about it is the fact that you will be in a position to know all that is expected of you way before getting to the signing ceremony. The main advantage being the ability to know what you are getting into before committing oneself. This will have the added advantage of determining if you are in a position to afford the property being floated in the market.

It saves you the embarrassment of walking into a dealers office only to realize that the piece of property is way beyond your reach. The place of planning when one is building a home cannot be underestimated. It is absolutely key to the success of the whole project. Therefore, if what you are looking for is sufficient information to plan with you cannot go wrong with this tool.

Depending on what you are looking for, there are different types of calculators that one can choose. It is possible to use actual physical calculators or excel spread sheets. Whichever you choose, it will deliver the expected result. In most cases they are free. However, should there be a need to pay, the cost is almost always negligible.

It is therefore imperative that this options be considered if one is to enjoy the benefits. Ideally, the type of calculator to be used should be determined by the need to be addressed. This includes the figures that are known. Basically it means if you are applying for a loan, then one must know the amount that they wish to take.

The emphasis should be put on knowing the principal amount. If you do not have this amount, it is not possible to begin the calculations. In many cases one should also endeavour to understand the expected rates to be paid. Finally, the period for repayment will also play a very important role in the whole scheme.

Protect Yourself When Shopping Online

I have to say that this Christmas I really made use of internet shopping. I was a bit under the weather so it really was a life saver to be able to buy the bulk of my presents online. Obviously there are a ton of ecommerce sites on the Internet and although most of them are legit there are always exceptions. Although I did a fair bit of research online for most of the stuff I was planning to buy I invariably went to a big brand site when it came to making the actual transaction. I would do a search on Google for, say, best coffee machine, read the various reviews and then head on over to Amazon to do the deal. Most of the time Amazon was cheaper in any case and nearly always included free shipping.

With modern technology’s quick accessibility to most online users all over the world, it is not new for us to hear crimes and other fraudulent activities done via internet. For sure, in one way or another, some of us or a family member has been a prey of these cyber crimes.

And it is for this reason that one must create a totally unique password for each of the varied online accounts that we hold. Here are some valuable tips for all online users for a safety online transaction:

2. Use a combination of symbols, letters and numbers when creating a secured password.

3. Never give any important personal details like birth date when creating a password, since this can easily be guessed.

4. Secure the recovery options of your password setting in your computer and always update your account password for security measures.

5. Don’t give or store your password to anybody even to your family members. Your password is your personal account and nobody has the right to have access on it.

6. Be sure to come up with a personal question and an appropriate answer to it that only you can answer in the event the online system asks for security measures in cases you forgot your own password.

Choosing a Safe Site for Your Fencing and Greenhouse Purchase

When buying online it is important to do your homework with the site you are buying from, then you can concentrate on your goods.

Putting a fence around the garden is a good way to achieve privacy.  If you choose a 6’ fence you will have a good deal of privacy.  This can be stained to a colour of your choice to make it look attractive and also help to protect the fence against the elements.

If you erect greenhouses in the garden do not put them too close to the fence.  Another way to achieve privacy in the garden is to grow some tall ferns.  However they can take up a lot of space and will regularly need to be trimmed back.  Then you have the problem of disposing of the branch clippings.

Buy Cat Litter Box Furniture Safely Online

I don’t know about you but on line shopping seems to me to be a bit of a lottery, most of the time it is perfectly safe but on the odd occasion you can get ripped off – especially if you don’t keep you wits about you.  Take for example the time my girlfriend tried to buy her father an iPod Nano for his birthday.  She looked around online and found it at a really cheap price on a website she had never heard of. She thought nothing of it and bought it using a VISA debit card, not a credit card, and the money left her bank directly.  She waited patiently for a few weeks for her Nano to turn up in the post but it never arrived. She decided to check her email and sent one back to their ‘customer service’ asking for some clarification on the situation.  This email bounced back as ‘non delivered’ so she tried to access the website that she bought it from directly and discovered that it had been removed without trace!  Needless to say, when she told me about it I was extremely annoyed – not just at the scammers but at her for using a debit card online without knowing the company she was buying from! As  far as I was concerned, that was the biggest mistake.

With that story in mind, I decided to buy my pet cat some cat furniture so I went online to look to see what was available and at what price it could be bought for.  There was lots of competing sites but the best one I found was http://catlitterboxfurniture.net/. One of the things that really appealed to me was that they fulfilled all their orders through Amazon.com so I had absolute belief that with such a partner as Amazon my money was safe and the item would be what I had ordered.  Their reputation really does mean a lot.  Needless to say, I placed my order and my item turned up two days later so my faith in online shopping and fraud has now been renewed!

Is it safe to hire a marketing company?

From what I heard from people I know who have online businesses, it is important to hire an internet marketing company for them to be known. This kind of company I heard brings customers to the website of the business. This makes me wonder how in the world a small company can make people from all over the world shop in a small online store.

I also heard that the company hired would use advertising tools that can only be understood by them as scientific formulas are used. I marvel at the way technology could do this and make people rich. One of the tools made by a hired online marketing company is the so-called search engine optimization. This I have been told is a tool used by many online marketers for quite a long time. It involves placing the right keywords into the website so that potential customers would be able to find it when making an inquiry in search engines. The seo agency should therefore make a thorough research and analysis on keywords used by target customers. This is how people are taken into a certain business website.

I often wonder if day brick-and-mortar stores will be completely replaced by online stores. This is actually a possibility because of the convenience online shopping offers. People would shop online now rather than go out and spend for gas, be hit with air pollution and suffer the sun’s hot and damaging UV rays. Staying indoors and ordering things online seem a better and a practical option. Online businesses are now trending and as long as they hire an internet marketing company to handle their online advertising campaign, I guess they have nowhere to go but up.

Why you should be cautious when starting the online dating journey

Starting in your online journey of finding your loved one can be quite an adventure as you never know where exactly you will find her or him. It can be a dangerous endeavor as many people have been scammed by a conman or other imposters. You have to be aware that there are also a lot of people in the world that do not have your best interest in mind. As I don’t want to be all negative in this article I also want and need to highlight the positive part of using internet and social media sites and online gratis datingsites as we say it in Flemish such as Gratis Dating Plaza, which is my personal favorite Flemish dating portal as it is a good overview site with reviews of the best online dating sites in Flanders (Flemish-Dutch speaking part of Belgium). I would recommend you to read a lot of different reviews on online dating sites to get a better and more complete perspective of the dating site you are thinking to join. As you gather more information on the dating sites you can be more assured of its safety. Just beware of all the traps on your road in finding love and I believe you will be safe and find what you look for as it is important that you fulfill your journey.

Why it is important to first read online dating reviews before signing up?

Keep your personal information as ‘personal’ as you can when you start with online dating.

As online dating sites such as rencontre gratuit (= free dating) in the French speaking part of Belgium and gratis dating in the Flemish speaking part of Belgium have gained much popularity in recent years it has become more important to know which online datingsites are safe. As you give your personal information open and somewhat public in a closed area of the dating site it is good to know that your personal information is retained and protected by the company that runs the dating site. Possible things you have to look for are that they look respectable (good design, works without problems and is well known and you know which company is behind it). As we take as an example the site Rencontregratuit.be is an online dating portal that gives an objective opinion on online dating sites, it is interesting which sites it recommends as it clearly shows the research the owner has done to have picked the safest dating sites in his country. The best tip I can give everybody that is interested in online dating is to be careful when going ‘online’ and be aware of the people that talk to and what information they request from you. Additionally I recommend keeping as much information about yourself as private as you can without becoming a bit too paranoid as the other person should be able to get to know who you are. I hope this helps all you online daters out here.

Why We Need Safer Online Health Information

One of the key areas to implement stricter rules and regulations on the web is when it comes to health information.  I’m not really talking about over the counter treatments and home remedies as I think the internet provides a useful resource in this regard.  For example I never would have found the informative reviews of Funginix, the antifungal treatment I credit with curing my nail fungus infection had I not started by search on the internet and found all the positive case studies and reviews.

But when it comes to prescription medication there really need to be better checks and balances.  These need to be prescribed by a doctor in the context of your personal situation, not bought from an online pharmacy of dubious standing.  Even Google itself was slapped by dubious practices in this area.

Here are some of the (hopefully) obvious reasons why online health information for prescription medicine should be closely monitored:

  • You should only take prescription medication once a doctor has assessed your personal condition.
  • Medications can interact negatively with each other, so your doctor needs to be informed about other drugs that you are taking.
  • There is the potential of severe side effects with some medications and your doctor will determine whether you fall into a risk group.
  • You may require ongoing monitoring throughout the course of your treatment to determine whether it is working safely.
  • Dosage amounts may need to be fine-tuned to your individual conditions and circumstances.

I’m sure there are many more reasons why we need a higher level of internet safety for prescription medications.  I hope this is an area that iwatchdog.info will campaign on in the future.

Keeping your Most Precious Treasures Safe

My wife and I recently re-evaluated our budget.  Of course, the mortgage is our biggest recurring expense (thank you, amortization calculator).  But we’ve come to realize that our house isn’t our most precious possession – our children are!  So we’ve decided that we should invest in software that will keep them safe while on the internet.  Our kids are in fact good kids, but there are so many ways for children to find trouble on the internet (intentional or otherwise) that we simply owe it to them to ensure that they’re safeguarded online.  Honestly, no parents can monitor their children 100% of the time so an investment such as this was a good one.  We found this very informative government publication that gave us some ideas on how to keep them safe.  So I just want to recommend to every one reading this:  Remember what the most important treasures are in your life and make sure you’re keeping them safe.  No cost is too high!

iPad 2 Jailbreak and Online Security

iPad 2 Jailbreak and Online SecurityEven when the next generation iPad just broke into the market, iPad 2 jailbreak tools have come out pretty quickly. With all the additional exciting features not readily available originally, iPad 2 Jailbreak tools have enhanced the value and use of the second generation iPad.

Note on Online Security

The following are the steps required to perform an iPad 2 jailbreak using iOS 4.3. Take note that this method utilizes the RedsnOw tool, one of the many jailbreak tools out there. Be sure to review the tool to be used the computer’s online safety is at risk. Use only iPad 2 jailbreak tools that are trusted by many users. Make sure to read forums and find out what is usually used by other iPad enthusiasts.

Steps to Perform an iPad 2 Jailbreak

Obviously, the first step to perform this iPad 2 jailbreak method is to download the RedsnOw tool. As a bit of a good measure, just in case something goes wrong, create a new folder and copy the current ipsw first. Make this folder easy to locate and name it conspicuously so that it will be easy to locate. After downloading this said tool and making the back up copy of the ipsw file, run it and make sure that it is directed to the iPad’s current ipsw – not the copy.

The next step in this iPad 2 jailbreak process is to check off the “Install Cydia” checkbox among the several options. It’s ok to keep the other options unchecked like “Install custom bundle” and “Just enter pwned DFU mode right now” since these will not be needed at the moment.

Next, if the iPad 2 is currently on then turn it off and then plug it to the computer. Once the device is plugged into the computer, click “Next.” After that the tool will walk the user through the process of placing the iPad in DFU mode. All that needs to be done at this point is to simply follow the instructions on the screen.

The rest of the process in this iPad 2 jailbreak method is pretty much automated and will work on its own without the need for human interference. Once the tool finishes all the needed operations, users can now click the “Finish” button – and the process is done.

Remember that this iPad 2 Jailbreak process uses RedsnOw with iOS 4.3. Users can now look around in the Cydia app store and try out a few of the new things in store for them. Now the entire process of an iPad 2 Jailbreak is complete.

A Safe Wine Site?

Look, as adults most of us like an occasional drink.  Of course, creating a safe environment for your kids isn’t always consistent with having a bunch of alcohol at home.  You pretty much know that at some point, your kids are going to drink whats there.

A wine of the month club is one way to be safer with your wine consumption.  To start, you can have the two bottles sent to your office, which helps you to not have the wine delivered to your front door.  Secondly, wine clubs need someone to sign for their packages so you know that your teenagers can’t sign for the package.

Overall, doesn’t that seem like a safer way to buy wine, especially if you want something specific online?

How Private is Your Web Browsing

When you sit at home surfing the web many people have a quite understandable desire for privacy.  After all none of us would like to think that every thought, whim or web site we visit is logged somewhere and could be viewed by anyone else.

Unfortunately that’s pretty much the real situation and there are a number of reasons why this is true.   Among the many problems with privacy and the web perhaps the most important one is a protocol called HTTP.  This stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol and you’ve probably noticed it in front of every web site you visit.

It’s the way your computer and the web servers communicate, it works pretty well allowing your Mac or PC to communicate with a Unix, Windows or Linux server quickly and reliably.  However the problem is that it does this all in clear text.  That’s right the vast majority of our surfing is done in clear, readable text – accessible by anyone, no encryption, no ciphers – just plain readable text.

To make this worse, is the way the internet works in a sort of open ended architecture – our web requests fire across thousands of servers all across the planet owned by a myriad of organisations and companies.  For instance the first port of call is your ISP – where every request that is sent from your computer is recorded and stored.  Here lies a complete and total list of everything you have done online from your home PC – all held for a few years in case someone wants to view it.

In fact this is the biggest barrier to anonymous surfing, the  fact that these logs exist and can be requested by pretty much anyone.  In fact in many parts of the world you don’t even need any legal ruling to obtain this and governments, agencies and interested parties can get a copy of all your online activities.

In fact anyone who wants any level of privacy should ensure that they use some sort of encryption to   hide these logs.   If you encrypt your surfing, through an SSL or VPN connection, these logs are not readable – all they show is the amount of data but not the destination site or anything you typed in.

Protect your Kids From Being Psychologically Affected By Inappropriate Content

The internet like all the good & influential things can be used for good & bad purposes. The information available on the internet today helps many live healthier lives, get better deals from health insurance quotes to grocery shopping, advance education, research & so many other wonderful things. Unfortunately, the same time it is full of inappropriate videos, images & other content that can be potentially hurtful to young minds & in some cases can cause some serious long term psychological damage. Psychological disorders may occur due to many different stressors, many of which are traced back to the childhood (Psychological Disorders). The inappropriate adult graphics or hate content on the internet can potentially be such a stressor. Psychologically traumatic content DOES exist, in fact it can be so bad at times that even adults can be ill affected by it mentally.

For this reason as a parent you might consider protecting your child from such content by using the appropriate software. You may go light on the settings, the more you block, the more your child is likely to look for a way to bypass it. Keep in mind that your child can be potentially more tech savvy than you. Ideally, you just want to block the real ill content and try to trust your child on the rest.

Solutions:

On computer level:

Many operating systems, including recent versions of windows include options for parental control already, so this can be a great feature for you to look in. Filters can be applied on the user level & the browser level. You most likely want to apply them to user level, since there are plenty of browsers that are available to download for free. Spend a little bit of your time configuring the options & ensure you get it right.

On Router Level: The better Option

If you are using a router with multiple computers attached to it make sure to get something more advanced with better configuration options. A good router will let you set parental controls on a certain computer or other device attached to it and use a list of “bad” words to block inappropriate content. Having it set on router level will ensure that your little genius won’t be able bypass your security settings on the computer you set. Also make sure there are no other wireless connections available that can be used.

Can You Get A Cash Loan Online Safely

When looking to apply for any type of Loan online or from a referral from your e-mail inbox, its worth considering a few things before filling out your private details and even your account information.

There are many websites online now that offer Cash Loans or Payday Loans and its not easy to know which ones to trust. Look out for a privacy page on a website. This is a good sign that they are working hard to protect and not sell on your privacy information. Some websites may or may not have a secure application form page. You can usually tell if the page URL starts with http:// or https://. the latter is a secure form. If you take a look at this cash loans website then when you fill in your application form it sends your details only to trusted lenders. It also has a detailed privacy page and the whole site feels trustworthy.

Another tip to shopping safe online whether its for applying for a Loan or even doing your food shopping is to look for reviews of sites.

When applying for a loan online use the above information and before accepting or signing anything be careful. The same applies to when signing up for something over the phone or at your door, use common sense and you’ll be OK.

The Kids Foot Locker Difference

Even the littlest kids can be very picky these days when it comes to the sneakers that they want to wear, which is why so many of them enjoy a trip to Kids Foot Locker to get to pick out the brands and styles they really want, instead of getting stuck with the shoes grown ups think they might like.

There are now more than 300 Kids Foot Locker stores located all over the United States and more are opening all the time. Watch your Kids when they’re Online

No kidding, being a parent is stressful.  According to this blood pressure chart, I’ve developed hypertension!  Parenting is stressful for a reason.  We’re in charge of keeping our young ones from harm and ensuring they grow up to be young adults that can make it in the world on their own. An important part of keeping your kids from harm is to keep an eye on them when they’re using the internet.  The internet is full of people looking to take advantage of children in some form or another, and it’s up to parents to be mindful of this and be sure that their kids aren’t doing anything unsafe online.  No parents are perfect, and your kids are bound to get themselves into some sort of trouble.  This is part of growing up.  But make sure you are aware of the dangers that kids can get themselves into online and be sure to do what it takes to keep them safe on the internet!

A Few Simple Steps To Online Safety

There will always be websites that are less than honest in what they offer, this can range from physical product offerings, information products and even websites offering services.

There are a number of things you can look out for when you land on any given website to gauge how trustworthy it is. If it is a commerce site then the biggest question mark you can look for is the prices. If you are searching for Rolex watches and end up on a website where the prices look too good to be true, then as the old saying goes, they probably are. Check for reviews of the website before parting with your money, do your due diligence and remember, don’t get caught up with too good to be true prices!

When it comes to buying information depending on what and where you buy it from you are generally safe, just make sure you are covered by a money back guarantee or the payment processor gurantees a refund. What you are not safe from is rubbish information, again do a little research before buying! The same goes for services, with the social media age it should’nt be too hard to find more information on a service that is worth buying. You can also contact the website owner and ask about any concerns you have, see what sort of response you get and if they came back to you in good time.

Reviews are big things to look out for, it is usually easy to spot a real review from somebody that has actually used the product. Take a look at this E-Lites review for instance, there is a video and personal images (not just catalogue shots) that show the actual product. The negative points are likely to be highlighted as well as the good points.

The web is safer than it used to be but you still need to be careful, just take your time and don’t jump into purchases and always try and use a credit card that has cover for online purchases.

Tips To Make Shopping Online Safer This Christmas

When shopping online it’s always very important to take care you don’t become a victim of Internet fraud. This is especially so at Christmas time when more of us than ever will take out our credit cards to make a purchase.

When you are buying the latest gadgets for family and friends it’s imperative that you only give your credit card details to reputable sites. Unfortunately you won’t always know which web sites are legitimate as even the shadiest of establishments can design a top quality shop front to fool unsuspecting visitors.

Here are a few tips to help you have a successful holiday season where you get all the gifts you need without getting ripped off:

  1. Use a different password for all the accounts you have at the different online stores, and also differentiate them from those used for your email account.
  2. Keep your virus checker and firewall program up to date to ensure you have the best possible protection from hackers as you surf the web.
  3. Use a browser which is more likely to be secure such as Chrome from Google, or Mozilla’s Firefox.
  4. Watch out for offers which look too good to be true, they usually are!
  5. A good idea it to find reviews of sites which deal with the product you are thinking about buying. This will mean you are less likely to give your credit card details to someone who will misuse them.

A good example would be the likes of The E Cigarette Shop which gives a run down of all the best companies who sell electronic cigarettes on the web. There are millions of sites such as this run by reputable writers who take their time to test out the products, service, and reliability of all the suppliers in a specific market.

  6. Another option is to do the entirety of your Christmas shopping from one of the Internet superstore which have an exceptional reputation which has been built up over the years. Amazon is the best example of this and it’s peerless customer service and low pricing means it’s a great place to pick up those gifts for the family without worrying about giving your credit card details to an unscrupulous store.

How to Avoid Getting Hacked

Protecting yourself online has never been more important. For many of us a lot of our personal lives are completely stored within email, calendars, Facebook, and a variety of websites. All of this information is vulnerable to online hackers. Worst of all it is not like you can contact a local Utah attorney if some hacker in Malaysia gets to you. Therefore you need to do everything you can to prevent hacking. In this article we will cover a few basic ideas you can start following right now.

1)      Set up double verification in your Gmail account – I can’t tell you how many times I see an obviously faked spam email come through my friends accounts. It is obvious they have been hacked and if they would have set up double verification in their Gmail this would not had been an issue.

2)      Play games and click offers cautiously on Facebook – It is amazing to see how often people share bad links on their Facebook account. Worst of all people actually click these links. Therefore here is the best rule of thumb; if something is too good to be true then it probably is. Don’t click it!

While these are some simple examples the same ideas can be applied to any other website. It is important you do your best to protect yourself so that your accounts don’t get hacked. After all who likes getting spammed by a random person in their email?

Only Buy From Secure Websites

When buying online you should look for sites with secure payment pages. You can recognise these by looking in the ‘address bar’ – the place where you type the address of the website you are visiting. Normally this will start with ‘http://’ but a secure page will change to ‘https://’ and will usually show a yellow padlock somewhere on the page.

Our shop sells gifts with your family crest and our payment pages are secure. However, it is surprising the number of people we get who telephone and tell us their debit/credit card details, saying they don’t trust the Internet and would rather talk to someone! When they place their order at the website we don’t get to see their card details, but obviously when they order by phone we do. Now I ask you, which is safer? Of course we aren’t going to use the card details to buy other things, but not everyone is honest.

Think twice about ordering by telephone: you be nervous about buying on the Internet but if you see that the payment page is secure, it is much safer than giving your card details to a stranger over the telephone.

Tough Parenting Decisions With Kids And Cell Phones

Parents should be worried about their children’s safety and in the world today there are many ways kids can get into trouble. A way that is new just within the last ten years involves cell phones for kids.

More and more cell phones are allowing texting, connecting to the Internet, and allowing their users to do all sorts of things. Obviously for an adult, this sounds great. But for kids, it can become a problem. Whether you have a very young child or a teenager, if you are a responsible parent you should want to learn how to keep your children isolated from all the bad things out there.

It may seem incredible to some that kids today as young as 4 or 5 are asking for cell phones. They catch on quickly and want to mimic what they see their parents doing and using. Additionally, that first kid in every class that gets a cell phones usually causes every other kid to go home and beg for one too. It is a real problem for parents who want their kids to stay unconnected to the tech world for as long as possible.

Kids can get into real trouble on their cell phones unless their parents give them a phone that has parental controls. The younger the child is, the more important having parental controls are. With some phones by makers such as Kajeet, parents can make sure their kids phones will only allow their kids to do what the parents want. For instance, you can set them so that only certain numbers can be called, only certain numbers can call in, the phone won’t work after or before a certain hour, and all sorts of other parameters a parent may want to set.

Kids really go for texting now and it is more popular with teens than actually talking on the phone. But texting has been in the news a lot in the last couple of years because with it comes a new way for kids to bully and harass other kids. It is another way kids can get into trouble with a cell phone and another reason some parents want their children to go without owning one for as long as possible.

The newer phones allow the downloading of all sorts of games and content and the older the child is, the harder it is for parents to stay in control. It is so difficult for parents who are facing these decisions for the first time to know exactly what they should do. Ultimately they have to use their best judgment and take into account their child’s maturity level. The more grounded a child is, the less likely they are to misuse a phone or get into some kind of trouble using it.

How Trustworthy are the Websites You Visit?

Please be aware that not all online stores and review websites are as “genuine” as they seem. Anywhere there is a chance for money to be made, the “wrong crowd” will begin to appear. So it always makes sense to try and find the most reliable source(s) of information you can.

Therefore look for “trust signals” in the websites that you visit. What do we mean by this? Well, have you ever noticed the Facebook Like Button? This is a trust signals. If you see a number of people “like” a website, it means they have shared it on their Facebook profile. Therefore it is something they are happy to tell their friends about.

Other things to look for if you are looking to buy a new product are personal reviews about the products in question. If you take a look at this juicer reviews website for instance, you can tell that the woman who runs the site owns the products she is reviewing. Not all websites provide this level of personal service.

Websites are like people. Some are honest while others are not. Be careful out there.

Shopping Online – Read Reviews Then Buy From Trusted Sites

When it comes to only shopping, the safety of your personal information is of paramount concern. Entering personal financial information such as your name, address and credit card information into a form on an unknown site is something that should not be done carelessly.

Let’s take appliance shopping as an example. I have no problem getting information on products from independent websites, but I prefer to actually make purchases on sites that I am already familiar with.  To that end, I may look at an independent refrigerator review site for unbiased information on the product I want to buy, but the purchase will take place on a site like Amazon.

This may seem a little unfair to site owners – as you use their information and they get no compensation – but you can still reward them.  Most sites contain links to merchants selling the products they are discussing, so if you link through to Amazon from an independent website it is a win-win situation.  The site owner gets a small commission – at no additional cost to you – while you get the reassurance of shopping with a firm you know and trust.

Note that privacy concerns are not a new issue.  They have long existed, even at brick and mortar stores, where an unscrupulous employee can steal your credit card info right before your eyes.  Just as with shopping at a physical location, you can protect yourself online by being vigilant and taking basic precautionary measures.

As long as the page where you end up entering your credit card information is on a trusted site, you can rest assured that it is safe from misuse.

Worst case; remember that credit cards come with fraud protection.  So if someone misuses your card either online or in a store, contact the card issuer as soon as your realize is has happened to start the process of negating the charges.

Looking for Local Products and Services? Don’t Give Away Personal Information!

When browsing online for local products and services, it’s important to take heed that you aren’t giving away personal information to the wrong parties.  Doing so can set off a tidal wave of problems, including identity theft.  On the vast majority of websites you visit you should never need to give away any sort of personal information, especially when looking for local products and services.

One example of a reputable local business establishment is “hair extensions columbus ohio” (sic), a hair salon in Columbus, Ohio that offers hair extensions to its clientele.  The site offers information about the types of services and pricing, special deals and coupons, directions to the salon, and contact information.  However, no where on the site does it try to extract visitor information, such as credit card number or home address.  If you want to purchase a product or service from a local business, most of the time it is best to do so in person — unless the business has set up a secure shopping cart on their website.

Help support local businesses, but remember to stay safe online!

Only Use Secure Websites! Especially For Any Financial And Medical Concerns

So the internet age is now in full swing. And while the internet is nothing short of a miracle and blessing it can also be a place of danger.  There are many people out there looking to do ill will to people through a number of devices.  First start by ensuring your banking info is secure, next make sure never to openly give personal private info to anyone or put it on any form online.  The risk is just too high.

Also consider if you are looking for health information online to take everything with a grain of salt.  Taking bad info from the internet and putting it to use to help your for any health issue can greatly backfire and I mean anything from advice on about curing a simple cold to sites offering sleep apnea treatment.  The bottom line is medical advice should be gotten from a doctor, anything on the internet do not put full trust into.

Make Sure To Use Safe Secure Websites When Dealing With Your Finances Online

When talking about financial privacy and matters it doesn’t get more important than internet safety.  You really need to be as careful as possible when dealing with your finances online, and that means starting by dealing with legit websites with everything from you online banking accounts to finding quality debt relief sites to deal with your credit problems.
The internet really is quite a dangerous place and ensuring that you are leaving yourself vulnerable to people trying to hack into your accounts and steal money or you identity or any other range of things is very important.  So many people have had to learn this lesson the hard way, and getting your bank account swiped is most definitely the hard way. So don’t let this happen to you.

Soccertools.com: Safe Soccer Browsing

The online world is a tough one, and you never know when you’re going to happen upon a site that just isn’t suitable for some reason, be it a number of provocative (or worse) pictures, horribly mean and/or vulgar comments by site users, or just a generally negative tone by the site owner.  This could even extend to site neglect such as outdated information, or worse still if the information is incorrect or misleading.

As soccer fans ourselves, we went searching for new soccer information sites that we would feel comfortable visiting on a regular basis and having our kids visit as well.  One we recently came across and want to share is SoccerTools.com.  If you read their ‘about’ page, you’ll find that the guys running the site are huge soccer fans themselves and they wanted to fill a void in the United States soccer website world.

There is a general lack of soccer information in one central repository and SoccerTools is aiming to fill that void by supplying tons of information such as final tables for each of the major European leagues, top scorers, World Cup historical stats, general soccer news and soccer equipment reviews.

It’s the last point we want to touch on that sets this site apart from the rest.  It is almost impossible to find a coherent explanation for why one type of soccer cleat is better than another or why this one soccer ball costs $150 while the next one costs only $40.  SoccerTools does a good job of explaining this, and they also have a great series of ‘Top Ten’ lists which are updated monthly and feature the Top Ten: Indoor Soccer Shoes, Goalkeeper Gloves, Match Soccer Balls, Women’s Soccer Cleats, and much more.

In our many times visiting this site, we did not ever notice an inappropriate story, picture, comment or forum post.  It seems the owners are very diligent about keeping that type of information off the site and they are so far quite successful.  We highly recommend SoccerTools.com.

Tips for Booking Accommodation Online

Nowadays people organize their entire holidays online. The advantage of this is that they can do a lot of the work that was formerly done by travel agents such as booking plane tickets, organizing transfers, booking hotel rooms and excursions and even ordering special meals for vegetarians and people with certain food allergies.

Not only can a traveler customize their holiday as they want by booking everything by themselves on the internet, but they can also avoid having to go on holiday with a group of strangers. They can chose their own itinerary and they can go at their own pace. Online booking has made organizing a holiday very easy and convenient.

However, the downside is that often the price is higher when you book individually. Package tours secure big discounts for hotel rooms and excursions because they have the power of group bookings. The other disadvantage of online booking is the danger of fraud. Most sites require that people give their credit card details to book. These details in the wrong hands can lead to someone spending money on your card without you realizing until you get home and read your statement.

To prevent this, it is a good idea to only use recognized booking sites. Also look for sites that only take your credit card number as a security measure. Many sites leave it to you to pay when you arrive at the hotel or resort. If you do pay online look for the https: code at the start of the URL address. It means that the site has added security.

Finally, sometimes it is not necessary to use a credit card. For example if you are on Koh Samui and you want to do a day trip to Koh Tan and Koh Mudsum all you have to do is phone a travel agent and they will come and pick you up in the morning. You pay on the point of delivery. It is always worth asking about payment if you are not sure. Send an email. If you don’t get a prompt reply then the company is not professional enough to deal with credit cards.

The Insecurity of Proxy Servers

It\’s not surprising that most people are concerned about privacy online.  The majority of people use the web for a large part of their lives – everything from online banking to booking holidays.  But of course this does come at a risk, there are a new breed of criminals who operate online who are keen to steal your information and use it to their advantage.

It\’s actually quite difficult to keep your details private online, surprisingly so. For a start the way that the internet has developed means that all our communications take part over a huge shared infrastructure.  In fact even the main protocol that is used to communicate online – HTTP, is a clear text based language with no built in security at all.  However the danger is that people try to use the wrong methods to secure themselves online but end up making matters worse.

Many people seem to think that using an anonymous proxy guarantees their privacy online.  However this is rarely the case, in fact most of the free proxies you\’ll find online are very insecure.  Some are set up by identity thieves – set up to specifically steal passwords and account details.  Others are just hacked servers that their owners have accidently left open by mistake.  The reality is that using one of these ninja proxy servers is probably about the worse thing you can do for your security.

Like many things in life, you get what you pay for – the only genuine secure proxy servers are run by private companies.  They then have the resources to ensure their servers are secure and properly administered.  In fact you\’d be far better using nothing that using a free server you found on the internet.  It\’s worth checking out some of the many VPN services available too, these increase security even further because they encrypt all your data in adddition to hiding your IP address.

Online Safety For Your Children

There are parents all over the world that constantly worry about their children\’s activities whilst they are online. The main concern is whether or not their children are speaking to complete strangers and what they may be discussing or sharing. This is a valid concern due to the many \’online predators\’ that have been headline news recently.

So, how would a parent go about blocking certain websites that they may be worried about or just websites in general that may not be suitable? Well, the first thing that should be done is to sit your child down to explain your concerns, you could even move the computer they use into the living room so you can see the screen and see what sites they visit.

Another option is to use software such as Norton (there are many others available) that have a parental control function that you can configure to block sites that you see as unfit.

Care should be taken with what children buy as well, there are websites that sell certain items such as e cigarettes, they may also supply a Vapor King coupon code for discounts. Other sites include those that sell anything intended for adults and people over a certain age. It doesn\’t mean there is anything wrong with these kind of sites and they are completely above board but you don\’t want your children making any unwanted purchases.

Finding a Wine Gift

Every website has to be worried about both security, but also who their content is available to.

Of course, some industries take that responsibility more seriously than others.

One industry which is struggling with how to deal with the question of online safety is the wine industry.  Anyone trying to buy a wine gift online has learned that two major questions are asked before you can enter a credit card.  First, are you 21 years old?  Second, upon checkout what is your birthday?

For the industry those questions show perhaps a concern about their customers, but also a concern for the regulatory arms of the government whom could easily shut them down for   a single wrong move.  The only problem for the average wine business is that asking for this type of information has been shown to decrease conversion rates of website visitors.

It puts honest retailers at a disadvantage.  If you don\’t ask for this info, you sell more wine and barely put yourself at risk because any common carrier (Fedex, UPS etc) has to have someone over the age of 21 sign for the package.

For an industry, that is a difficult situation to be a part of!

How to Read Online Travel Reviews

One of the biggest problems with online travel reviews is that more often than not they are not scrutinized by humans before they are published. A software program checks for flagged words such as obscenities and for spammy links and if a review passes these checks it is automatically approved. Reviews are free content and the bigger the site, the greater the traffic and thus the bigger the revenue. This is the logic.

TripAdvisor has been pursuing this business model and has recently got into trouble. Hotel managers and other accommodation providers have reported being blackmailed by customers asking for discounts or they will write bad reviews about a business.

There is plenty of room for abusing this automated review system. Hotel owners and tour operators can write bogus good reviews about their own businesses. Alternatively, they can write bad reviews about their competitors. If you look at booking sites like hostelbookers you see widely contradictory reviews. It doesn’t seem like the reviews refer to the same places.

There are a number of solutions to these problems. the first is obviously human screening. This is not fool proof but it will weed out the most obvious offenders. A better method is to only let actual customers of services review places. For example the r24.org system only allows people who have actually stayed in a place and paid with a credit card enter a comment. Thus sites like samuiaccommodation.info has links to reviews of Koh Samui hotels by people who have actually booked accommodation on Koh Samui.

The final solution is for the reader of travel reviews to be more critical, to take an overview. If only one person complains that their room was dirty whereas all the other reviews say the hotel was clean or make no mention about hygiene then you should discredit the one rogue review.

As with much information on the internet online travel reviews should be read with a pinch of salt and a good deal critical deliberation to separate the real review from the fake and malicious review.

Financial Freedom Revealed on Local News

It never fails! Every time there is something worthy of my attention on TV, or on the news there is something else distracting me. Just last week before the commercial break I hear the new caster say, Coming up next: what is an IVA, and how can it help you gain financial freedom….

This was something I wanted to hear about. Anything offering financial freedom is worth listening to. Of coarse during the commercial my two year old told me he had to go potty. Being just days into potty training my world stopped as we rushed into the washroom.

Figuring I had plenty of time for the commercial break I was in no hurry. However, I quickly learned my son was in little hurry as well. I have come to believe he wanted quality time with Mom much more than continuing his potty training. Needless, to say I missed the news cast, but was forever grateful to have DVR so I did not have to miss the wonderful IVA information they provided.

Beware of Review Sites

One of the biggest problems with the internet is not viruses, identity theft or pornography but false information. There is a lot of good software programs that can protect your computer from viruses. Macs hardly ever have this problem. Identity theft is a serious issue but usually if you only shop on respected sites like Amazon and you use long passwords you are safe. There are also filters to stop children inadvertently going to porn sites. What there is no software, patch or firewall to protect the public from are sham sites that pedal sham reviews in order to collect commissions from Amazon, Commission Junction, Expedia and so on.

I guess that 80% of the content on the internet is copied and slightly wrong. I don’t advocate trying to censor the internet but I wish people would have more guile to choose better websites to get their information from.

Here are some signs of bad review sites:

  • They never change. The content is not updated.
  • The text is blatantly stolen from Amazon or Wikipedia.
  • The site has very few pages or posts
  • The site is written in the first person even though the person writing clearly has little idea about what he or she is writing about.
  • The site is written in English by somebody who obviously is not a native speaker. This is outsourced rubbish. A person should write in their own language about fridges, coffee machines, toasters etc. if they are sincere.
  • The site has no links to user manuals, helpful forums or other online resources.

So the next time you want to buy an item on the internet and you type in something like ‘helpful programmable thermostat reviews‘ keep these points in mind when you go to a site. Otherwise you will not get the information that you want and you might up later regretting your online purchase decisions.

Perhaps the notion of ‘watch dog’ is wrong. It is more about educating the public in the ways of internet marketers. This is partly what I think the recent spate of Google Algorithm changes is all about – trying to put quality content in front of the searcher.
